© Reuters. FRANKFURT, (Reuters) – Tesla’s Model 3 topped European vehicle sales in September. This marks the first month that an electric car has topped monthly charts in Europe, according to research firm JATO Dynamics.
Tesla Model 3 saw a 58% increase in year-on–year registrations, with 24,591 cars. Renault (PA) Clio, Dacia Sandero and Volkswagen Model (DE:), JATO reported.
The Model 3 and Y of Tesla were the top-ranked battery electric vehicles, followed by ID.3 from Volkswagen.
“The Model 3’s impressive performance can be partially explained by Tesla’s aggressive end-of quarter sales push,” JATO reported.
“September is a historically strong month for US manufacturers’ registration results in Europe. Since 2018, it has accounted for an average 68% of the US manufacturer’s third-quarter deliveries.”
These landmark sales numbers come while Tesla waits for final approval for its European gigafactory near Berlin in Gruendheide. CEO Elon Musk hopes production will start in the new year despite German red tape.
Brandenburg’s Regional Environmental Ministry said last week it would conduct another online consultation to allow local residents to voice their concerns regarding the factory. It was concerned that the process didn’t comply with applicable regulations.
