WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:) Inc responded to an information request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) as part of a formal safety inquiry into the Autopilot driver-assistance software.
NHTSA released Monday’s Oct. 22 memo stating that Tesla had responded and was being evaluated. For the entire information request, the company requested confidential business information (CBI).
NHTSA sent Tesla an 11 page letter on August 31 with the questions it needed to answer before Oct. 22.
NHTSA questioned Tesla earlier this month about why the company had not issued an recall for software updates to Autopilot that improved vehicles’ detection of emergency vehicles.
Following a number of Tesla and emergency vehicles-related crashes, the US government launched an inquiry into 760,000 vehicles.
NHTSA identified twelve crashes involving Tesla cars using advanced driver-assistance system and emergency vehicles. NHTSA reported that the majority of these incidents happened after dark.
In a separate letter, NHTSA asked Tesla about its “Autosteer on City Streets” which the company also refers to as “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) released in October 2020, and raised concerns about limits on disclosure by drivers of safety issues.
“Despite Tesla’s characterization of FSD as ‘beta,’ it is capable of and is being used on public roads,” NHTSA said.
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving beta software was re-released on Sunday. This happened less than one day after the release. Many users had reported false collision warnings.
Tesla must reply by November 1 to NHTSA’s latest information requests.
Tesla declined to comment immediately on Monday.
