KHARTOUM (Reuters – Sudapet, Sudan’s oil company said Wednesday it would participate in a nationwide civil disobedience protest called by trade unions. The movement was launched to counter the military overthrow and the strike of doctors.

Khartoum’s neighbourhood committees have set out a plan for further street protests and barricades that will culminate in a march of “millions” Saturday.

“We announce joining the civil disobedience in support of the people’s decision backing the civil democratic transformation and until this demand is achieved,” Sudapet said in a statement carried by the Sudanese Professionals Association.

According to the Unified Doctors Office which is composed of various unions: “As promised and earlier announced that we would go on a general strike in Sudan in case of a coup,” we have kept our promise and are following through.

On Tuesday, the chief of Sudan’s Armed Forces claimed that the military had taken power from the government. Protesters marched against this claim.

The coup on Monday ended Sudan’s democratic transition, which had been halted two years ago after the uprising that toppled Omar al-Bashir, an Islamist autocrat.

Tuesday night, the SPA received information about reports that coup forces had attacked protesters in Khartoum. They fired shots at protesters and attempted to breach barricades, it claimed.
