LONDON, (Reuters) – Lawyers for America will make a new attempt to extradite Julian Assange from Britain on Wednesday. They argue that Assange’s mental state should not be a barrier for him facing U.S. justice.

Australian 50 year old is being sought in the United States for 18 criminal charges. This comes after his organization published thousands secret files and diplomatic cables.

Assange supporters gathered in London’s High Court early Wednesday morning, singing “Free Julian Assange” before Stella Moris (his partner and mother of his children) arrived.

Assange is currently being held in Belmarsh Prison, despite his denials of any wrongdoing.

This is just the latest step in an ongoing legal battle which has been going on since 2012.

WikiLeaks was first established in 2009 when the U.S. began publishing vast amounts of classified military records and diplomatic cables. The U.S. claimed that these documents put people’s lives at risk.

Sweden demanded Assange’s extradition to Britain shortly after he was accused of sexual crimes. He fled to London, Ecuadorean embassy after losing his extradition case in 2012.

Assange was later sentenced to prison for violating British bail conditions. However, the Swedish case against Assange had been dismissed and U.S. authorities requested his extradition.

January 4, 2005 – A British judge dismissed his argument that this case was political, an assault upon freedom of speech and said that he should be exonerated because of his mental problems. He would have been at high risk of dying in U.S. custody.

Assange’s supporters view him as an antiestablishment hero. He was exposed by the U.S. in Afghanistan, and they claim that Assange’s prosecution is motivated politically against journalism and freedom speech.

U.S. security officers and prosecutors view him as an enemy reckless to the state, whose actions endangered the lives of those named in the leak.
