Coronavirus infections at U.S. meat plants far higher than previous estimates

(Reuters) – The House Select Subcommittee of the Coronavirus Crisis found that COVID-19-related deaths and cases among meatpacking workers in the United States was three times higher than previously thought.

Major meatpackers were surveyed by the subcommittee Tyson Foods (NYSE:), JBS USA and Smithfield Foods control over 60% and 80% respectively of America’s pork and beef markets. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was also reviewed.

At those companies’ plants, worker cases of COVID-19 were 2.6 times higher, and deaths were 3 times higher, than a previous estimate by the Food and Environment Reporting Network (FERN), which had been used by government agencies and media throughout the pandemic.
