U.S. issues first passport with “X” gender marker -Breaking

WASHINGTON (Reuters), – On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department stated that they had issued the first U.S. passport to include an “X” marker for gender. The marker was intended to provide non-binary, transgender, and gender nonconforming travelers with a non-male or female marker on their travel documents.

Antony Blinken, Secretary of State, announced that the X marking would now be available on passports. This follows other countries like Australia, Canada, Germany and Australia, which already have a third-genre option.

Ned Price, spokesperson for the State Department said that the United States is moving to add the “X” gender marker for applicants for U.S. passports and Consular Reports on Birth Abroad.

The first person to receive the “X”, gender passport did not get it from Price.

“We look forward to offering this option to all routine passport applicants once we complete the required system and form updates in early 2022,” Price said.
