U.S. senators call for passing laws to protect online privacy for kids -Breaking

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Two Democratic Senators asked Wednesday for the passage of two bills that would limit online advertising for children and restrict how data from these kids can be used by Big Tech Companies like Google (NASDAQ) and Facebook (NASDAQ).
Ed Markey and Senator Richard Blumenthal, both Democrats, demanded the adoption of the updated 1998 Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. (COPPA) would, among others, increase the age for children whose data could not be collected without their permission from 12 to 15.
A bill should be passed that bans auto-play and push alerts. This would prevent users from being pulled onto apps and kept there.
Markey said, “Whether you’re on Facebook, YouTube or TikTok, all these platforms seem to work with the same code of misconduct that endangers kids and teens.” Big Tech has lost the trust of its users.
Blumenthal asked for measures that could be passed in a matter of weeks.
Concern was expressed by lawmakers about the content being displayed to children and teens that encourage dangerous behaviors, eating disorders, or self-harm.
Markey is the House author for the 1998 Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

On Tuesday, TikTok and Snapchat executives testified before the court that they wanted to provide safe and fun online experiences to children and exclude any potentially harmful or unsavoury content.
