REUTERS/Jonathan ErnstWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The White House stated that it was still realistic that President Joe Biden’s spending plan would be approved by Congress on Thursday. However, he acknowledged that he might need to leave for Europe without a deal.
Biden will travel to Rome Thursday morning for a meeting with leaders of the G20 countries and Glasgow, Scotland to address the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Biden was hoping to use the Glasgow conference to showcase U.S. efforts in combating climate change, and to ask for similar actions from other countries.
But, the spending plan of his approximately $1.5-$2 trillion for climate mitigation and social security net expansion remained mired Wednesday in internal party squabbles. The same was true for the $1 trillion infrastructure bill.
“Of course he would like to head on this trip with a deal,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Wednesday. However, world leaders are “looking at the president’s commitment” on infrastructure and climate she said, not what’s being passed in Congress.
“They’re seeing we’re on the verge of making a deal,” she said.
A few progressive Democrats in Congress stated that it was unlikely Wednesday will see an agreement and suggested that fundamental questions, such as how to pay, would remain.
“I don’t know,” Senator Bernie Sanders said. But I doubt it. The revenue package is not clear to me. Every revenue source that could be considered sensible seems gone.”
Biden will have to approve any bill that is passed. Psaki indicated that Biden will not push back on his trip in any significant way to make it more popular.
Psaki explained that although there’s flexibility for the morning, he shouldn’t be forced to cancel his trip.
