(Reuters] – U.S. Secretary Antony Blinken spoke to Mariam Sadiq al-Mahdi about Sudan’s military coup and condemned the detention of its civilian leaders.

He stated on Twitter (NYSE : ) that the two men also talked about how best the United States could support Sudanese citizens’ call for democracy and a return of civilian leadership.

The African nation has witnessed thousands take to the streets following Monday’s transfer of power by the military from a transitional regime. In addition, many have been killed during clashes between security forces and the protesters.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of the Armed Forces, the leader in the military takeover has dismissed the joint civil-military committee that was established to guide the country towards democratic elections after the uprising by the people in April 2019 overthrew Omar al-Bashir, the autocrat.

Blinken spoke out about Washington’s support of a civil transition according to the Sudanese Constitutional Declaration. Nid Price, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said that Blinken was referring to Washington’s support.
