Investing.com: The dollar edged up in the early hours of Thursday in Europe, as central banks in Australia, Japan, and Europe made policy changes that jolted trading.
At 2:55 AM ET (0755 GMT), the Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six other currencies, traded 0.1% higher at 93.835, with movements seen limited ahead of next week’s policy-setting meeting by the Federal Reserve.
The stock traded 0.2% less at 113.56 on Thursday after the central bank kept its asset purchasing plans and interest rates unchanged. According to the central bank, it also reduced its projections for economic growth in this fiscal year. It also decreased its inflation forecast from 0.6% to zero for 2022. These changes suggest that it will not be as aggressive in its tightening of monetary policy.
The Reserve Bank of Australia had earlier decided to not buy the government bonds central to its stimulus programme, even though yields were much higher than its target 0.1%. The market expects that the Reserve Bank of Australia would raise its benchmark interest rate of 0.1% sooner than previously stated (2024), or even before 2022.
Traded 0.1% less at 0.7504, but still close to its three-month high.
Also, the index rose 0.2%, to 1.2374, after ending its bond-buying stimulation on Wednesday. It suggests it might raise interest rates as early as April 2022, as it seeks out to reduce high inflation.
traded flat at 1.1604, just above its 15-month low of 1.1523 hit earlier this month ahead of the European Central Bank’s later Thursday.
Although the ECB will likely use December’s meeting to make key decisions regarding its emergency stimuli policies, there has been a strong uptake in expectations of rate hikes due to rising inflationary pressures.
“It still seems rather far-fetched that the ECB will move its benchmark rates as early as next year,” said analysts at Nordea, in a note, “and [ECB President Christine] Lagarde will probably seek to tone down current market pricing.”
The index fell to 1.3742 on Wednesday, the day U.K.’s Chancellor of Exchequer Rishi Sonak made his speech, in which he committed to spending real-term growth on the backs of improved forecasts for economic growth and tax revenue.
