BERLIN, (Reuters) – German unemployment declined more than was expected in October. The official statistics showed that the largest European economy had remained on a post-pandemic hiring spree despite the supply shortages that affected manufacturers.

According to the Labour Office, 39,000 people were out of work in seasonally adjusted terms. This brought it down to 2.46 million. According to Reuters, the fall would be around 20,000.

Seasonally adjusted, the jobless rate fell to 5.4%.

Detlef Scheele chief Federal Labour Agency, stated “Despite improvements”, that the numbers are still much lower than they were before the pandemic. This means there is still a lot to do and big problems remain.

Germany’s unemployment rate was at 4.9% as of March 2019, when the country implemented its first strict measures to combat the coronavirus.
