REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/File Photo(Reuters) –Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech Se (NASDAQ:), announced on Thursday that they plan to ship 50 million additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccines to the U.S. government before April-end as part of the preparations for vaccinating children.
This decision comes following a recommendation by an outside panel to U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve the vaccination for children 5-11 years old. We are still waiting for the decision of the agency on vaccines in that age range.
Companies said that if the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory panel approves the request, they plan to begin shipping vaccines immediately in pediatric 10 microgram dosages as instructed by U.S. government.
Up to now, the U.S. has obtained 600 million vaccine doses within the nation and an additional 1 billion for distribution to countries with low and middle incomes.
According to the drugmakers, initial data from clinical trials on vaccine use among children aged between 2 and 5 years old and 6 months to 2 years is anticipated in either the fourth quarter or the first quarter 2022.
