REUTERS/Callaghan O’Hare(Reuters] – The NAACP civil rights group called for free agents of five North American professional leagues in North American to refuse to sign agreements with Texas-based sports teams Thursday. It cited Texas’ restrictions against voting and pro-choice rights.
While the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal against Texas’s near-total ban of abortion, Republican Governor Greg Abbott passed voting restrictions last month. Critics said that these will restrict Black and Hispanic voters from casting ballots.
In a letter to Major League Baseball players’ associations, the NAACP mentioned these issues in its concern.
In a letter, the NAACP wrote that they were witnessing an “incomprehensible assault against basic human rights” in Texas.
The Abbott press office was not reachable for comment on Thursday night.
According to the governor, voter fraud is a major concern. Texas’ anti-abortion law bans abortion after six weeks. This was welcomed by conservatives who long wanted to end American access to abortion.
Derrick Johnson, the President and CEO of NAACP, stated that he is calling for athletes to “protect democratic values”.
He said, “Professional athletes are some of the greatest role models in our country and they should join us to fight to promote democracy.”
In protest of Georgia’s recent voting restrictions, Robert Manfred, MLB Commissioner moved the All-Star Game out of Atlanta and the amateur draft from Atlanta earlier this year.
