REUTERS/Al DragoWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Three Republican senators in the United States said Friday that they had filed legislation to exempt India of sanctions over its purchase of a Russian S400 missile defence system. They cited the importance to work with allies against China.
Roger Marshall, Ted Cruz and Todd Young introduced the bill. The Bill would allow for a 10-year exemption of member countries to Quadrilateral security Dialogue (Australia, Japan, and India) from CAATSA. A 2017 broad law that was intended to punish those countries who did business with Russia, it also allows them to exempt themselves from any sanctions.
This bill was added to the calls for Congress to lift sanctions against India.
In a Tuesday letter addressed to Biden, Republican Senator John Cornyn, and Democratic Senator Mark Warner called for a waiver due to national security concerns and wider cooperation.
