American Airlines reduces flight cancellations but staffing challenges disrupt travel

American AirlinesThe company cancelled over 300 flights on Monday (or 10%) as it attempted to stabilize operations after reporting staffing shortfalls that caused disruptions in travel for thousands.
Fort Worth’s airline cancelled over 2,000 mainline flights in the past week. It blamed high winds and crew shortages for these cancellations. According to FlightAware, the airline cancelled over 1,000 flights on Sunday, representing 30% of its operations. According to CNBC, this affected over 136,000 customers.
American Airlines had tallies that showed that the main reason for cancellations was a lack of staff. American Airlines did not respond immediately.
After urging thousands to get buyouts and leaves of absence in the midst of last year’s pandemic, this is just the latest big disruption for air travelers. Airline staffing shortages make it difficult to repair from common issues such as bad weather.
Southwest AirlinesFlight cancellations in April cost the airline $75 million. It had to cancel its 2021 schedule again so that it could avoid additional strain. Spirit AirlinesSimilar problems caused by the heat costing the company about $50 Million, the company said.
