REUTERS/Carlos Garcia Rawlins(Reuters). -Apple Inc. cut production of iPad tablets so that it could allocate more parts to the iPhone 13 – This indicates the global chip supply shortage is hitting Apple (NASDAQ.) harder than originally indicated. Multiple sources were cited Tuesday.
The iPad production was half of what Apple had planned for for the last two months. According to the newspaper, parts that were intended for older iPhones are being transferred to iPhone 13.
Apple managed to weather the supply crisis better than most companies, despite iPhone 13 production hitting a wall due to closures of factories in Asia and high demand during the second half. Apple also has its large buying power and long-term supply contracts with chip vendors. Apple continues to eat into the market share of its competition in the third quarter.
Nikkei reported that the iPhone maker prioritizes iPhone 13 production in part due to higher demand for its smartphone than the iPad, as Western markets emerge from the pandemic.
Apple has not yet responded to Reuters’ requests for comment.
