(Reuters) – Michelle Wu, a Boston City Councilor, became the first person of color and woman to be elected mayor after Annissa Essaibi George her rival, lost Tuesday’s election. Local media reports say Wu was defeated by Essaibi Georg.
Wu is a progressive Democrat and has a strong relationship with the Massachusetts U.S. Elizabeth Warren supported liberal policies, including rent control, policing reforms, and the Green New Deal for Boston. Essaibi George was a woman from color who presented herself as the moderater and more pragmatic candidate.
The current mayor is Kim Janey. She took office when Marty Walsh, the former mayor of the city, was elected. However, Janey, who has been acting as the mayor since Tuesday’s election, is Black.
