FAIRFAX (Va.) – Republicans pushed Democrats from Virginia’s governorship. They were also running in New Jersey, heavily Democratic, on Wednesday. This signaled trouble for President Joe Biden’s Party heading into the next year’s congressional election.

Republican Glenn Youngkin was a former executive in private equity and won victory against Democratic former Governor Terry McAuliffe on Tuesday. He had disassociated himself enough from ex-President Donald Trump to win back moderates that had previously voted for Biden just one year ago.

New Jersey Republican Jack Ciattarelli faced incumbent Democrat Phil Murphy. The result was a draw, even though the registered Democratic voter base is more than 1,000,000 to 1. The Democrats held on to their hope, knowing that more votes would be added in their strongholds.

Independent voters, who were turned off Trump’s politics and saw both of them make strong gains in suburbia. Biden’s win in Iowa in 2020 was a clear indication that Democrats had a slim majority in Congress and were therefore highly vulnerable to Trump’s style of politics in 2022.

Biden’s current legislative agenda would be blocked during his final two-year term if Republicans control either or both chambers of Congress.

Biden could be further hampered by the results, which may make it difficult to pass twin bills that total $2.75 trillion. These bills would help rebuild roads and bridges in the country and bolster social safety net. They’ve been held back by infighting for months between Democrats of the progressive and moderate wings. Some moderates may be less inclined to vote for the big-ticket bills after the election defeat.

ROADMAP REPUBLICAN

Youngkin (54), declared victory following a campaign that focused on the anger of parents over COVID-19 schools and teaching about race, gender, and other issues. Youngkin was careful not to offend Trump’s core base and did not endorse his lies about widespread election fraud.

McAuliffe’s attempts to depict his former rival chief executive at the Carlyle Group (NASDAQ) Inc. Trump acolyte, Inc fell flat among voters during a time when Biden’s approval rating is at its lowest since his presidency began, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos National Poll, which was taken last Wednesday and Thursday.

Youngkin said that, “Together,” would change the course of the commonwealth. He spoke at an event in Chantilly (Virginia) on Wednesday.

Youngkin may be able to follow Youngkin’s example of focusing on culture warfare and promising more parental control over public school education.

Youngkin was open to the Republican Party’s outrage at the school discussion on systemic racism. While Youngkin pledged to end the teaching and promotion of “critical racism theory,” which is a legal framework that analyzes how racism affects U.S. laws, policies, and practices, it ignored the fact Virginia school officials said that such a subject was not being taught in schools.

When he hesitated at first to condemn Trump’s assertion that 2020 was stolen from him, he drew harsh criticism from Democrats. These false claims have continued to anger Trump supporters and lead to an attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob.

Youngkin claimed that Biden had won legally later, but then called to audit Virginia’s voter machines. Democrats accused Youngkin of validating Trump’s election conspiracy theories.

In Virginia, the Democrats held a 10-seat lead. The Republicans appeared to have erased that advantage by winning a 50-50 split. Or perhaps one seat. Virginia’s Republican lieutenant governor candidate and state attorney general candidates were both leading in their races.

Youngkin was elected by Virginia Republicans in an unconventional convention format, in May rather than in a state primary. The format was intended to choose a moderate candidate and not one that is closer to Trump.

Trump still sought credit and thanked “my BASE”, in an acknowledgement of Youngkin’s contribution.

NEW JERSEY WOBBLES

As Wednesday dawned, the New Jersey race was still too close for comfort. A defeat for Democrat Murphy could send chills through Democratic Party. Despite having razor-thin majority in both Houses of Congress, the Democratic Party has failed to pass Biden’s landmark legislation nationwide.

Murphy (64) ran for office as an unabashed Liberal, hoping to become the first Democratic governor in New Jersey to win reelection after four decades.

Ciattarelli was faced with a difficult battle in New Jersey where Democrats outnumber Republicans.

Ciattarelli (59), a former state senator and businessman, has criticised Murphy’s requirement for masks in day-care and schools. Although he supported tax cuts and law enforcement reforms, Ciattarelli does not believe in banning abortion. This is a rare position for a Republican.

According to local media sources, Ciatterelli was seen with Trump during a Stop the Steal rally held in November 2020. The former-president claimed that he had won the election.
