LISBON, (Reuters) – Opal Tometi, co-founder of Black Lives Matter, urged tech companies to take swift action against racism embedded in facial recognition systems.

The U.S. activist, BLM co-founder in 2013, told Reuters that “a lot” of algorithms and data were racist. He spoke out on the sidelines to Lisbon’s Web Summit.

She said, “We need technology to really understand how racism (racism), shows up in technologies that they are creating.”

Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform the world. It can be used in a variety of sectors.

There are however concerns.

Over the last few years, the tech industry was confronted with a series of questions about the ethics and use of AI technology. Critics claim that such technologies could harm privacy, target minorities, or normalise intrusive surveillance.

Certain tech companies acknowledged the possibility of some AI-driven facial identification that is popular with retailers and hospitals as security measures.

Facebook (NASDAQ;) declared Wednesday it had shut down its facial recognition program due to safety concerns. Microsoft (NASDAQ:), however, stated last week that facial recognition technology would be sold only after federal regulations are passed.

In the United States, and in Britain, police use facial recognition to identify suspects. However, a U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology study found that the technology was not as effective in identifying African American and Asian faces than it is for Caucasian faces.

The United States was the site of the first wrongful arrest for incorrect facial recognition. As an example of how tech workers are lacking diversity, the United Nations cited this case.

Tometi stated that tech companies must be careful as technology can speed up the development of values. The impact of technology will not be as good, but it can speed up the process.

She urged software developers to pay attention to every detail and suggested that they hear more from Black people.

“Unfortunately, I believe that tech companies have a lot to go in order to make a link with the community,” she stated.

Algorithmic Justice League states that AI systems have been criticized for not being inclusive because they are dominated by white male developers.

Tometi declared, “We require solutions for the future. We need future challenges.” Tometi stated that they must ensure the protection of vulnerable and marginalised communities. This is their obligation.
