SYDNEY, (Reuters) –Australian police have said that a 36 year-old man is likely to face charges on Thursday for the disappearance and abduction of a young girl aged four from an outback camping site. She was missing for 18 days until she was discovered safe in a locked room.

According to authorities, the man was taken twice by hospital staff for self-inflicted injury. However, he is now in custody of police and is being interviewed.

Rod Wilde (detective superintendent for Western Australia) said that there is much more work ahead.

Cleo Smith was last seen with her family in their tent at Blowholes Shacks in Macleod in the morning of October 16. This led to an extensive search that included aerial and land crews as well as CCTV cameras and roadblocks.

On Wednesday, police entered a Carnarvon house to search for her. The town is about 100 km south of the camp site. Australian media reported that the house is only three kilometers (2 miles) from her family’s home.

Police released an audio recording on Thursday of their entry to the house and of the finding of the girl inside a room. She’s ours. An officer might be heard exclaiming, “We’ve got her.”

The toddler responded to several times being asked for her name, saying, “My name’s Cleo.” Police said that she had been playing with dolls and the light was still on.

Cleo’s fmaily Mark McGowan told her that Cleo is a bright, cheerful, and sweet girl. He also said she looked well-adjusted for her experience.

She would be accompanied by specialist child interviewers. Authorities had also instructed her parents how to speak to her in order to keep her memories intact, officials said.

Twitter’s #CleoSmith hashtag has been trending since Wednesday. A photo posted by police showed Cleo smiling from her hospital bed, drawing almost 54,000 “likes”.

To thank the police, pink and purple balloons were placed on the streets of Perth, capital of Western Australia.
