(Reuters) – A former top Trump Justice Department official will give evidence before the congressional committee that is investigating the attack on Capitol Hill on Jan. 6, 2017, a congressional aide said.

Jeffrey Clark was unable to testify before the House of Representatives Select Committee last week due to his new lawyer.

Clark didn’t immediately reply to our requests for comment.

Clark’s testimony, as with other witnesses before him will remain behind closed doors.

Under condition of anonymity, the congressional aide spoke.

Clark was the ex-acting head of the Justice Department’s civil division. He was a supporter of Trump’s unverified claims that Democrat Joe Biden won the November 2020 election due to fraud.

The committee issued Clark a subpoena on Oct. 13 asking for records from Clark and to testify in a deposition before Oct. 29.

The panel announced it had subpoenaed Clark and said that it wanted to know all details regarding the efforts of the former administration to spread misinformation about the election results.

The Justice Department’s Inspector General announced in January that his office would be opening an investigation into Clark’s plot to remove Jeff Rosen, then Acting Attorney General of the Department. This investigation will help Trump pursue baseless claims and open an investigation into Georgia voter fraud.

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee reported that Clark had also written a letter which he asked Rosen to accept. It urged Georgians to hold a special session of the legislature to look into voter fraud.

The Senate investigation revealed that Clark’s plans failed because senior officials threatened to quit in protest.
