However, the Iraqi military described it as an attempted assassination. But Kadhimi escaped unscathed.
According to the Iraqi military, the attack was on Kadhimi’s home in Baghdad’s Green Zone fortified. The statement did not provide any further details.
Kadhimi’s official Twitter account (NYSE:) stated that the prime minister is safe and called on calm.
Two officials from the government confirmed that Kadhimi’s home had been damaged by an explosion, and also assured Reuters that Kadhimi is safe.
The attack was not immediately claimed by any group.
Western diplomats who were based at the Green Zone (which houses foreign embassies and government buildings) reported hearing explosions and gunfire.
Recent protests by supporters of Iran-linked heavily armoured groups have been held near the Green Zone. They are against last month’s general election results that dealt a serious blow to their political power.
