Potential A321neo freighter may not be part of AirAsia’s cargo plan

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters). Teleport, AirAsia Group Bhd’s logistics arm Teleport, said that while it aims to increase its fleet of cargo aircrafts, this may not mean tapping into Airbus SE’s huge order (OTC) A321neos.

Pete Chareonwongsak, a Reuters interviewee, retracted comments he had made last week about Teleport looking to convert a “meaningful portion” of AirAsia’s 362 A321neo passenger aircraft orders to a new freighter model.

Chareonwongsak explained that she was merely saying, “If Teleport succeeds, we’re talking large orders in terms of freighters.” AirAsia is a great advantage but it doesn’t mean we are able or able to source freighters through AirAsia.

Teleport will examine freighters built from passenger planes, such as the Boeing (NYSE:) 747-800 that it inducted last Wednesday.

Airbus did not announce the creation of a freighter version of its A321neo, and there is little to no pressure from the industry to sell freighters to increase production.

Chareonwongsak claimed that Teleport participated in AirAsia/Airbus’ discussions on the feasibility of an A321neo cargoer model.

Teleport is aiming to grow its freight business so that AirAsia could consider it to operate a part of their freight fleet. Teleport may also be able to source freighters through other cargo or airline operators, he stated.
