AMD lands Meta as customer, takes aim at Nvidia with new chips -Breaking

(Reuters) -Advanced Micro Devices Inc announced Monday that it had won Meta Platforms Inc, a customer for data center chips. This cements some of its successes against Intel Corp (NASDAQ)
A range of new chips were also unveiled by the company, which aims to compete with larger competitors such as Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:) Corp) in supercomputing market as well smaller rivals including Ampere Computing within cloud computing market.
AMD, after years of being behind Intel’s market-leading x86 processor chips in the market, has slowly gained market share ever since 2017. In 2017, Chief Executive Lisa Su led a comeback plan that put AMD on a track to having more powerful chips than Intel.
Mercury Research reports that AMD is now responsible for nearly a quarter (25%) of all x86 chip market shares.
AMD is now a major customer of many Intel’s most important customers after it secured Meta (NASDAQ;) as its customer. The company also has contracts with Alphabet Inc’s Google Cloud, Amazon.com Inc’s Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:)’s Azure.
AMD also revealed plans Monday to compete with Intel and other rivals. A chip called “the MI200” was announced by the company. It’s an accelerator designed to improve certain tasks, such as machine-learning and artificial intelligence.
Nvidia’s A100 processor, together with chips to accelerate artificial intelligence, is being beaten by the new AMD chip.
AMD announced that Oak Ridge National Laboratory (NYSE 🙂 will be using the new chip to power its “Frontier” supercomputing system.
AMD also targeted smaller competitors. AMD announced the launch of a “Bergamo”, a central processor that will be available in 2023’s first quarter. One28 cores will be available for cloud computing businesses that lease their chips to customers on a core by core basis.
