U.S. Republicans renew push to sanction Nord Stream 2 pipeline -Breaking

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – A group of U.S. Senate Republicans announced Monday that they have introduced legislation to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 – a Russian-backed pipeline which opponents claim would harm U.S. allies.

Led by Senator Jim Risch of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (Top Republican), the six legislators offered the amendment as an addition to the National Defense Authorization Act. The NDAA is a comprehensive defense policy bill, which Congress only passes once a year.

An agreement was reached between President Joe Biden of the United States and Angela Merkel, German Chancellor.

The $11 billion, almost completed project has been opposed by Ukraine for many reasons. It will allow Moscow to theoretically stop gas routing via Ukraine. This would be a detriment to Kyiv’s security and make it ill-equipped to pay lucrative transit fees.

Gazprom, Russia’s national energy company (MCX), has been racing to complete the pipeline that will transport natural gas beneath the Baltic Sea.
