It took place at the Higher Regional Court Braunschweig in September.BERLIN (Reuters). BERLIN (Reuters). Clara Mayer, an environmental activist, and Greenpeace Germany’s heads have filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen (DE) in Germany. The NGO stated on Tuesday that the carmaker was accused of not doing its bit to fight climate change.
Before filing suit, the claimants gave Volkswagen eight weeks for them to review their demands. They wanted Volkswagen to stop producing internal combustion engines cars by 2030, and reduce carbon emissions by at minimum 65% from 2018.
Volkswagen has not yet responded to the request for comment. According to the company, it was not considering suing any individual firm as a solution to an issue that affects society in general.
A spokesperson for Volkswagen stated that the company had already made clear commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement 2018 and was investing 35 billion euros into electromobility in 2025. This statement came after Greenpeace demanded it in September.
In late September, the German Environmental Organisation Deutsche Umwelthilfe filed a similar lawsuit against BMW (OTC:). Both companies had also refused to comply with demands for a halt in production of fossil fuel-based automobiles by 2030.
Two climate cases were used in the lawsuits: A May 2020 German decision that the country failed to safeguard future generations against the effects of climate change and an April Dutch order that Shell (LON) reduce its carbon emissions. This is the first time that a private firm has been held accountable for the impact it had on the environment.
