OTTAWA/MEXICO CITY, (Reuters) – The U.S. President Joe Biden plans to hold an in-person meeting in person with leaders from Mexico and Canada. This will be the first such event in over five years, according to four sources familiar with the matter.

The final details of the plans were not yet in place, however, they indicated that if it went ahead, it would be sometime during the week ending November 15, Washington. Because the plans weren’t yet made public, sources from Mexico City and Ottawa requested anonymity.

Since taking office in January, Biden has had virtual meetings with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the Mexican president, and Justin Trudeau (the Canadian prime minister). He also attended the G20 conference in Rome together with Trudeau. It coincides closely with political tensions about energy, immigration and trade.

When asked by a senior Biden official about the possibility of a meeting between Lopez Obrador and Biden, he replied “stay tuned”

Trudeau was happy for Biden’s win in the election a year back, but trade disputes have flared over old lumber and pipeline issues as well as procurement.

Canada has expressed its dissatisfaction about U.S. tax credits on electric vehicles. It says it would react appropriately if such credits were introduced. Ottawa warns that the proposed tax credits could cause harm to the well-integrated, continental automobile industry.

Canada and the United States voiced concern in July about Mexican energy policy.

The White House refused to comment. Lopez Obrador, Trudeau and Trudeau didn’t respond to our requests for comment.
