(Reuters) – Two couples sued a California fertility center for having their embryo switched with another couple during in vitro fertilation. Each couple gave birth to the baby and raised it for several months until they realized the error.

Daphna Cardinale and Alexander Cardinale filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday alleging that California Center for Reproductive Health had breached contract, committed medical malpractice, and inflicted emotional distress. They sought unspecified damages.

Unfortunately, the clinic didn’t immediately reply to my request for comment.

Daphna was the mother of a 2019 girl, but her husband noticed that the baby didn’t look the same as either of their parents. According to the lawsuit The couple received a DNA test two months later to confirm that the baby was not their child.

After contacting the clinic via a lawyer, the clinic finally informed them that a different couple had received their embryo and given birth to their daughter. According to the lawsuit, they met another couple and decided to have a second child about one month later.

They said that the horror of this scenario cannot be overstated. Daphna (NYSE:) memories of childbirth with Alexander will be forever contaminated and clouded by the sad reality that another person had their child. The child Daphna fought to give birth was also someone else’s.”

According to the Cardinales, they experienced severe emotional trauma, along with their daughter of five years, who was bonded with their baby.
