(Reuters) – A U.S. journalist held in Myanmar’s military regime is now facing additional charges for sedition or terrorism.

Danny Fenster, 37 years old, was arrested at Yangon’s international airport as he tried to leave the country.

The new allegations against Fenster, the most severe of his charges, were not immediately known.

He could face up to 20 year imprisonment under the terrorism law or 20 years in prison for his sedition.

Than Zaw Aung his lawyer said that while they don’t know why the charges were added, it was clear they weren’t trying to add more.

“Danny felt also sad and disappointed about these new charges.”

Fenster was indicted for incitement and breaking a colonial era unlawful association act. Insein prison in Yangon is where he is currently being held.

He was not granted amnesty by authorities in recent amnesty of hundreds detained for anti-junta protests. This included media staff.

In what rights groups call an “assault on the truth”, the military has removed media licenses, stopped satellite broadcasts from the internet, and taken hostages of dozens journalists.

Bryan Fenster, Bryan’s brother, stated in a text that they were as devastated by these charges as the others against Danny.

The spokesperson of the ruling military council didn’t respond to calls for comment.

A request for comment was not received by the U.S. Embassy in Yangon immediately.
