(Reuters] – Roche Holding AG(OTC:), which is still months away in obtaining regulatory approval for the experimental Alzheimer’s medication, has begun to take aim at Biogen Inc’s Aduhelm (NASDAQ:). It claims that it will offer a competitive price.

Although Bill Anderson (head of Roche’s pharmaceuticals) did not give pricing information for Roche’s treatment for lethal brain-wasting, he indicated that the price could be as low as 30% less than Aduhelm’s annual $56,000.

Biogen’s first drug to target the Alzheimer’s-related brain changes was approved in June. Aduhelm sales have stagnated as Medicare (the U.S. government health program for seniors over 65) evaluates coverage.

It has created opportunities for Roche and other rivals, whose drugs still need to be reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and are awaiting approval.

Anderson stated that Roche prices new treatments in America “at or below what we replace… even though our results were superior.”

Roche, Biogen, and other drugmakers will present data at this week’s annual Clinical Trials on Alzheimer’s Disease conference.

Roche’s Alzheimer’s candidate, gantenerumab (like Aduhelm), is intended to clear amyloid plaques out of the brains and minds of those with this disease. Roche stated that the pivotal trial results will be available in 2022. Before seeking regulatory approval, Roche says it will await these results.

Anderson stated to Reuters that Roche aims “unambiguous data” on its efficacy.

Biogen’s drug, approved by FDA, was approved based upon evidence that it decreases Amyloid Brain Plaques, a probable contributor to Alzheimer’s. There is no proof it slows its progression.

Eli Lilly & Co (NYSE:) has begun a rolling FDA application for its own experimental Alzheimer’s drug based on evidence of its plaque-removing ability. Lilly could have its drug approved in the U.S. by the end of the year.

Medicare will issue its final decision on April 19 regarding its reimbursement policy. This policy will be applicable to all plaque-reducing agents.

Biogen’s third quarter Aduhelm sales were only $300,000. This is far lower than the $11,000,000 Wall Street expected. The drug is being used in neurology centers. While the insurance claim process works out, the company will provide Aduhelm free of cost as a monthly injection.
