WASHINGTON (Reuters] – President Joe Biden’s U.S. infrastructure bill is set to be signed soon. This will bring about the largest increase in investments since 1977, and also create around 1,000 jobs within the department.

Bipartisan legislation provides more than $62 million in incentives to support emerging and conventional technologies within the department.

Biden, along with his colleagues in Congress, are seeking to pass a larger reconciliation bill. This would provide additional incentives for energy transition. However this has been stalled by internal disagreements.

Tarak Shah (the DOE chief of staff) said to reporters, “Over the next days, weeks and months, we will have to step up.” He spoke about the program included in the bipartisan bill.

We expect to hire around 1000 new people in order to spend the money effectively and efficiently for Americans. There are approximately 13,000 federal workers at the DOE and many thousands more at the 17 national laboratories.

Bipartisan legislation provides $7 billion of incentives to encourage the creation and sourcing of new technology.

There are also $21.5 billion available for demonstration and advanced nuclear power plants and hydrogen gas production plants.

Hydrogen can be used in fuel cell vehicles, mixed with , or in making synthetic fuels for ships, but costs about four times https://www.reuters.com/article/usa-hydrogen-climate-idAFL2N2NP1LG as much to generate from wind and solar power as from fossil fuels.

To improve the efficiency of the U.S.’s energy system, this bill includes $11 Billion in grants to States, Tribes, and Utilities for enhancing the electrical grid’s resilience from cyber attacks and extreme weather.

The department will also be able to create a $6 billion program to credit nuclear power to its existing reactors. This is to help them compete with those that use abundant natural gas, and have lower prices for renewable energy.

Nuclear power credit will be the most difficult program to create. It can take 180 days for it to go live. Before receiving subsidies, reactor owners must submit an application showing their plant is under financial duress.

Officials stated that nuclear power is essential to meet Biden’s climate targets, which include decarbonizing the electricity grid by 2035.

Jeremiah Baumann was the DOE deputy chief of staff. He spoke out about nuclear reactors that not only produce clean electricity but can also generate toxic waste. There is no U.S. storage for this kind of waste.
