Heavy rains expected to ease in India, Sri Lanka; 25 dead -Breaking

CHENNAI (Reuters), – The heavy rains in Sri Lankan and South India have left at least 25 dead. Officials said that the situation will improve in the coming days.

The Indian Meteorological Department issued a bulletin that forecast moderate to light rainfall for most areas. There may be occasional flooding and areas of low elevation in certain areas.

Pradeep John, an amateur meteorologist who’s widely followed by Tamil Nadu, India’s worst-affected state, said, “The worst has passed and occasional rains may occur.”

Today’s rain will continue to fall, but with big breaks. It is not alarming.

The rain brought on by low pressure depression has claimed 20 lives in Sri Lanka. Most of them drowned. Officials also said that five people were injured during landslides.

Tamil Nadu has seen five deaths in the capital Chennai, India’s largest automobile production centre.

India’s northeast Monsoon runs usually from October through December and brings rain to the southern regions.
