SAN SALVADOR – In response to a sudden increase in murders, the Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele sent the military into the streets of the country to protect it.

More than 30 murders occurred Tuesday and Wednesday in Central America’s poor nation of 6.5 million inhabitants. The military deployment comes after the deaths. Since Bukele took office in 2019, the number of daily murders have dropped to less that two per day.

Bukele wrote on Facebook that “We have deployed the national police force and the armed forces to limit the increase in murders registered over 48 hours”, along with video of soldiers patrolling the streets.

There was no way to know how many soldiers had been deployed, or for how long. Bukele stated that “dark forces” were at work but did not elaborate.

According to a government source, the vast majority of troops will be stationed in densely populated areas around the capital of San Salvador.

Bukele’s critics claim that the president is becoming more authoritarian. The sight of soldiers in public places will be a problem for them. Bukele, 40 years old, declared that he was a “dictator” on Twitter in recent weeks. This joke didn’t do much to calm the fear of opposition. In 2020, he was heavily criticized for his occupation of congress by military and police. Many saw this as an intimidation tactic.(Full Story https://www.reuters.com/article/us-elsalvador-politics-idUSKBN2030SI)

According to El Faro, Murder Rates have fallen sharply since the government took control of them. The newspaper El Faro reported last year that officials from the government negotiated with members of gangs in order to lessen violence and get better prison conditions.

Bukele called it a “farce”, but the attorney general stated that they would investigate.(Full Story https://www.reuters.com/article/us-el-salvador-politics-idUSKBN25V2WW)

Bukele’s political adversaries speculated that Thursday’s spike in murders may be evidence that truce is crumbling.

Bukele stated that more steps to stop violence were being taken in the next hour.
