WASHINGTON (Reuters] – The Washington Democrats have introduced a motion for the censure of Republican Representative Paul Gosar. It was over a video in which he killed Alexandria OcasioCortez, Democratic Representative and then swinging his sword at President Joe Biden.

Democrats who supported the measure claimed that the threat to elected officials from violent images, such as the one in the video, is increasing after Trump’s Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol.

This resolution was supported by 60 House Democrats and calls for Gosar’s presence in the House chamber during the censure. The House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is yet to vote on the matter.

Censures are a symbol of reprimand and do not carry any fines or penalties. This could make it awkward for Gosar’s fellow Republicans. They would need to be recorded condemning or supporting him. The House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy is still silent, in spite of Democratic demands for his actions.

A minimum of 23 legislators have been censured in the House. Usually, it was for financial misconduct or decorum.

Gosar posted the 90 second video Sunday and has been defiant ever since. On Tuesday, he stated that he would continue to fight for Trump’s America First agenda.

Pelosi supported ethics and law enforcement investigation into this matter. Ethics violations may result in removal of office, reprimands and fines under House rules. A threat can be considered a felony violation and could result in imprisonment.

It appears that the video is an edited version of a Japanese animated program. Twitter (NYSE) placed a warning label on the video warning it that the content violated their “hateful conduct” policy and restricted the user’s engagement. The social media company attached a notice to the tweet, stating that the “it may not be in the public’s interest for this Tweet to remain accessible.”
