ISTANBUL (Reuters] – Selahattin Demirtas, a prominent Turkish opposition figure in prison, has received a 2 1/2 year sentence for a falsified medical report.
Basak Demirtas (44), was represented by lawyers. She claimed that she was sentenced because of the incorrect date listed on her 2015 medical report.
Selahattin demirtas is a former leader of the pro-Kurdish Party and one Turkey’s most well-known politicians. He has spent almost five years in prison on terrorist-related charges, which he strongly denies.
Basak Demirtas’s attorneys could not be reached immediately for comment.
Nacho Sanchez, the European Parliament’s Turkey raporteur, stated that she felt her sentencing was “political” because of a clerical mistake.

It’s so political. This is a measure of how worrying the Turkish judiciary is.”
Basak Demirtas remains free in the midst of an appeal against her conviction. According to the newspaper, her lawyers stated that there was an error in the records. This could be rectified by looking into the appointment book at the local health centre.
