MOSCOW (Reuters), – Belarus would like Russian-capable Iskander missile system systems, said President Alexander Lukashenko in an interview published Saturday by a Russian defense magazine.

Russia is close to Belarus. The European Union accuses Russia of causing a crisis by sending thousands of migrants into Belarus and forcing them to attempt to illegally cross the border to Poland. Brussels will soon sanction Minsk.

Lukashenko said to National Defence magazine that he required the Iskander portable ballistic missile system. This has a range as high as 500 kilometers and can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads.

He said, “I have several divisions to the west and south. Let them (there) stand.”

To the west of Belarus lie EU member Poland and Lithuania. It has borders with Ukraine in the south.

Lukashenko didn’t indicate whether any discussions had been held with Moscow over the acquisition of the missile system.

Russia’s Defence Ministry didn’t immediately respond to our request for comment.

Belarus and Russia were formally part, and continue to be in discussions for many years about moving closer.
