BEIJING (Reuters). China has been fighting the biggest COVID-19 virus outbreak in its history, as revealed by numbers released Monday. The Delta variant is affecting travellers to China, where infection rates are higher than in other parts of the country.

Chinese officials reported 32 domestically transmitted diseases with confirmed symptoms for Nov. 14. Most of them were located in Northeastern Dalian. Based on official data, this brings the number of local infections since Oct. 17 up to 1,308, Reuters calculated. This is more than the 1,280 instances from the Delta summer outbreak.

China’s largest-ever Delta epidemic has now affected 21 provinces and regions, as well as several municipalities. Although it’s smaller than other outbreaks, Chinese officials are determined to stop any future transmissions by following the zero tolerance guidance of the government.

Due to the rapid implementation and testing of individuals in high-risk areas and closures of cultural and entertainment venues as well as restrictions on travel and tourism, twelve provinces were able stop their flare-ups in less than a week.

Wu Liangyou of the National Health Commission stated that Dalian continues to be infected by the virus.

According to Reuters, Dalian has been reporting 24 local cases per day since Nov. 4 when the first symptomatic patient from the new outbreak became apparent. This is more than any Chinese city.

Some cities close to Dalian such as Dandong and Anshan have claimed that visitors from Dalian need to be held in quarantine for up 14 days.

By Nov. 14th, mainland China had reported 98.315 confirmed cases of coronavirus with symptoms. These included those transmitted from overseas. There were 4,636 deaths.
