WASHINGTON (Reuters). – A resolution will be considered by the U.S. House of Representatives to deny a Republican member of Congress for a Tweet (NYSE: ) that depicted him attacking President Joe Biden and killing a progressive.
Some prominent Republicans criticised the Democratic decision to discipline Paul Gosar over the video. Others suggested that they remove another Republican from a House committee seat for their vote in support of the $1 trillion bipartisan Infrastructure Bill to repair roads and increase broadband access.
The vote is in response to Gosar posting an anime video https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-congress-gosar/u-s-democrats-move-to-censure-republican-gosar-for-violent-video-idUSKBN2HX1UV this month that showed him killing Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The attack was 10 months following the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol by thousands of Donald Trump supporters.
According to a source, the Wednesday plan would also eliminate Gosar from Committee on Oversight. Ocasio Cortez serves as an alternate member.
Gosar stated to reporters Tuesday, “Not talking.” He said last week he would fight for Trump’s “America First agenda.”
Some Republicans opposed the call to punish Gosar.
Chip Roy, Representative of the American Red Cross stated that it was a risky road.
House Democrats stripped firebrand Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-congress-republicans/u-s-house-punishes-republican-congresswoman-over-incendiary-remarks-idUSKBN2A42IF of her committee assignments this year for incendiary remarks that included support for violence against Democrats.
Kevin McCarthy, the top House Republican, hasn’t taken any action to sanction his fellow members. Republicans claim Democrats are not being punished for inflamatory rhetoric they say was responsible for the anti-racism demonstrations that took place in U.S. towns in 2020. Some suggested that Democrats could face consequences if Republicans win the House majority by 2022.
Rodney Davis, Republican Representative said that it was regrettable that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democrats have set precedents which will echo throughout this House’s fabric for many decades to follow.
Some Republicans demanded that Representative John Katko be removed from the House Homeland Security Committee as the top Republican for his support of the infrastructure bill. This was opposed by House Republican leaders, Trump and the ex-president.
House Republicans have struggled internally since the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, which prompted 10 lawmakers including Katko and Representative Liz Cheney to vote for Trump’s second impeachment https://www.reuters.com/article/usa-trump-int/u-s-house-impeaches-trump-for-a-second-time-10-republicans-vote-yes-idUSKBN29J092.
Cheney was ousted https://www.reuters.com/world/us/liz-cheney-vote-us-house-republicans-reach-watershed-over-trump-2021-05-12 as House Republican conference chair in May, and Wyoming Republican leaders voted last weekend to no longer recognize her as a party member, according to a report in the Casper Star-Tribune https://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/wyoming-gop-votes-to-no-longer-recognize-rep-cheney-as-a-republican/article_66c3a62d-7207-54c7-b277-183817c0563c.html.
UNDAUNTED
Katko was among 13 House Republicans that backed infrastructure legislation. This bipartisan bill had been passed by the Senate with the support of 19 Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The criticisms were not a problem for him.
“I will be focusing on the security of our border and supporting law enforcement. I also want to stop Democrats reckless spending under the Build back Better Act. This conference supports these efforts. Katko sent a statement to Reuters, stating that he intends to keep leading them.
According to one person who was familiar with the conversation, McCarthy advised members to not seek punishment for Katko or the 12 House Republicans at a party meeting on Tuesday.
But conservatives singled Katko out for helping House Democratic leaders pass the bill over opposition from progressives in a 228-206 vote https://www.reuters.com/world/us/bidens-sweeping-infrastructure-social-spending-bills-finally-get-vote-2021-11-05 on Nov. 6.
You’re not just representing your locality if you assume leadership responsibility. David Schweikert, Representative of the District said that you are also representing your conference.
Roy and Schweikert are members of the House Freedom Caucus, a hardline group. Greene was another Freedom Caucus member and called 13 Republicans “traitors”.
Some of the thirteen have received death threats in relation to the vote for infrastructure.
