TOKYO, Reuters – On Thursday the Japanese automobile lobby stated that it had made a decision. Toyota In rare circumstances, President Akio Toyoda will serve the third term of his chairmanship to guide the industry during times of seismic change.

Toyoda (a member of Toyota Motor Corp’s founding family) has held the position of head of Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association from 2018. Past chairpersons served only a two-year term.

Toyoda stated that he accepted the position after hearing views suggesting that continuity was needed in order to get through this stage.

The auto industry faces increasing pressure from governments to reduce global warming by tightening emission regulations. However, there are disagreements about how to do it.

Six major carmakers, including General Motors (NYSE :), Ford Motors (NYSE :), Volvo and General Motors were present at the U.N. Climate Conference in Glasgow last week. Daimler AG (DE: Mercedes-Benz) signed a statement to end fossil-fuel-powered cars by 2040.

Toyota refused to be part of that group, saying that the majority of the world was not ready to shift to electric vehicles. Germany’s Volkswagen (DE 🙂 is another notable exclusion.

Toyota has advocated for the use of a combination of hydrogen and plug in hybrid technologies, despite some companies pledging to all-electricity over the next few years.
