BERLIN, (Reuters) – German courts ruled that Volkswagen SE (DE) and Porsche SE’s 2008 decision to put defeat devices into vehicles on the U.S. markets was classified information that should have gone public.

Braunschweig’s regional court ruled that all parties would have until January 31, to respond to its preliminary conclusions and show evidence regarding knowledge management.

Volkswagen admitted that it had cheated U.S. diesel engine test results in 2015. It sparked the worst crisis of its history and caused more than 32 billion euro ($37.7billion) in car refits, legal and fine costs.
