U.S. to allow texting to new ‘988’ suicide prevention hotline -Breaking

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), voted on Thursday unanimously to mandate that wireless carriers allow texting to U.S. National Suicide Prevention Hotline “988”. This hotline will be available by July 2022.

Geoffrey Starks FCC Commissioner said that recent research has shown “young adults prefer text messaging and are more inclined to skip psychological support over talking face-to-face or by phone.” To reach the suicide prevention hotline 800 273-8255, dial “988”, a three-digit number.
