Prime Minister NarendraModi declared Friday that India will repeal three laws which have been protested by farmers since last January.

Modi stated, “Today I am here tell you and the entire country that we have decided, to take back, or repeal, three agricultural laws,” according to CNBC’s translation in Hindi.

He said that the government would begin the constitution process in parliament this month to repeal existing laws.

These laws were passed by the Indian parliament in September 2020. Reforms would have removed some of the safeguards that India has given to farmers for many decades. Instead, they would allow India’s farmers unrestricted access to free market mechanisms and high competition.

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about half of India’s 1.3 billion population but accounts for only around 15% of GDP.

Although the government met with farmers representatives several times last year, there have been no breakthroughs.

The new law has been opposed by thousands of farmers who claim that it will lower their crop prices and cause them to lose money. New Delhi police officers were confronted by protestors in January. At least one of them was killed. Reuters reported.
