According to the INSEE statistics agency the unemployment rate increased by 8.1% in third quarter compared with 8.0% during the prior three months.
According to Reuters polling, the unemployment rate was 7.8% in the third quarter.
While the French economy recovers from the pandemic it has seen a severe shortage in labour as some firms try to satisfy the growing consumer demand.
The unemployment rate did not fall in tandem, however. There are now more people searching for work than those who have remained on the sidelines throughout the crisis.
After a successful mass vaccination campaign, consumer spending rebounded and the French government increased its forecast for growth several times. It currently anticipates growth of 6.25%.
