Rising fertilizer costs have worried farmers. Green Markets North American Fertilizer Price Index climbed 4.4% to reach $1,094.35/short ton on November 12, 2021. It is now higher than its previous record of $1,048.23. As farmers are unwilling and unable to absorb the increased prices, they plan to shift to less fertiler-intensive crops.

Due to supply and storage constraints and low levels of stock, the prices have risen to new heights in Europe as well as Asia. This has led to an increase in fertilizer costs. Natural gas, which is needed to produce nitrogen fertilizers, such as ammonia or urea, can be used. China has also restricted exports of fertilizer until June 2022, to preserve domestic availability. So fertilizer prices should remain high despite the demand-supply imbalances.
