MCD, which is based in Oak Brook, Ill., operates and franchises McDonald’s restaurants that serve mainly locally relevant fast food, soft drinks, and other beverages worldwide. The company owned 39,198 restaurants as of December 31, 2020. JACK, headquartered in San Diego (Calif.), operates and franchises Jack in the Box quick service restaurants, offering a range of hamburger chains and breakfast dishes. On September 27, 2020 it had franchised 2241 Jack in Box quick-service outlets.

Ordering food online, driving-thru or contactless delivery have all helped fast-food restaurants combat COVID-19’s negative effects. Even though food costs are increasing due to supply chains bottlenecks fast-food restaurants should be seeing an increase in sales because of the pent-up consumer demand. Global fast food market growth is projected to be 4.5% to $773.44 trillion by 2027. Both MCD as well as JACK will be able to benefit.

MCD is up 6.5%, while JACK has lost 5.9% over the last three months. MCD is a clear winner with 17.7% gains versus JACK’s negative returns in terms of their past nine months’ performance. Which stock is better? We’ll find out.
