Axie Infinity was one of the most popular NFT games in this year’s growth. This game was a mainstay of crypto gaming after the NFT boom.

Perhaps surprisingly, virtual pets were the mainstay of NFT collecting. Even the first Pokémon game was promoted with the slogan, “Catch Them All.” People’s passion for collecting is a well-known thing already. However, NFT collection is not able to allow for interaction. While you may be able to use your items as avatars somewhere else, physical collecting requires more interaction.

That’s where the blockchain gaming industry wins. Crypto games provide you with a decent level of engagement with your items, even within a game’s ecosystem. Virtual pet games, which the Pokémon-like games are, provide both collecting and interacting mechanics.

It is however not the only game for virtual pets in this industry. Moreover, Axie Infinity is even far away from the original Pokémon games in terms of mechanics and visuals. In this article, we’ll review the most prominent virtual pet projects in the blockchain gaming industry.

Aurory

Aurory is very close to Pokémon games in terms of visuals and gameplay. Axie Infinity’s focus is on breeding and battles. Aurory, however, offers an adventure mode that is closer to JRPG. Moreover, visually, the game is close to the Pokémon series; even creatures’ cards look similar but realized in 3D. Aurory, however, emphasizes the different colors of violet. This project stands out among the many other blockchain projects.

Aurory’s blockchain-based platform means that it is less expensive to transact and takes less time than ERC-20 token-based gaming. Developers have already introduced staking and conducted an IDO for $AURY. The real game is still to come. It sounds and looks promising. It has been supported already by Solana Brands and Animoca Brands.

Aavegotchi

Aavegotchi goes beyond a virtual pet game. Developers are striving to build the largest Aave multiverse. Their efforts have been successful so far. “Pets” are represented here as pixelated ghosts with skins and wearables, which is an allusion to the protocol’s mascot.

NFTs can be switched between 2D or 3D. This allows them to be used in mini-games of both kinds. In general, it’s an entire adventure game within the metaverse that is currently being developed.

Grasshopper Farm

It is surrealistic. Because the pet market is saturated with collectibles for pets, it’s hard to find interesting projects. Yes, Grasshopper Farm does look a little shabby and odd. My younger brother would definitely use the word “cringey” to describe the game. This is what makes the game unique. You can describe the visuals as real grasshoppers mixed with wearables made for humans.

Telegram is the second feature that makes this game unique. This means you don’t need an extra-productive computer or smartphone. It is not a common feature but this makes playing much more fun and easier. It works well together with the visuals.

You can collect, complete quests and battle opponents.

Furthermore, the game is powered by Enjin, thus it’s part of its ecosystem. This means you can use Enjin’s “The Multiverse” universal package of NFTs, which are usually suitable for most of the games within the ecosystem.

My Defi Pet

The game looks very much like Axie Infinity. It’s built on Binance Smart Chain (BSC). You will be able to grow pets or harvest crops to feed them. According to the developers, battle mechanics are coming soon. The two main ways to earn in the game so far are selling pets and completing quests. You can play the game on your smartphone or computer.

Binamon

This game is based on Binance Smart Chain, as the title suggests. But this game is not the only one. It’s an entire system of games. The main one is, of course, a virtual pet RPG, like Pokémon or Axie Infinity, where you can collect, train, and place your monsters in the battle arena. Binamon Runner on the contrary is now available. MOBA is currently in development.

Ethermon

Ethermon has so far provided similar functionality as AxieInfinity and most virtual pets games. Ethermon has the unique feature that your Decentraland-based monsters can be used. You can swap these NFTs between 2D or 3D. You can currently interact with pets within the MANA multiverse. But, developers are currently preparing the whole MMPORG in Decentraland.
