LONDON, (Reuters) – Charging points for electric cars will have to be installed on new buildings throughout Britain starting next year as part of new legislation announced Sunday by Boris Johnson’s office.
According to the regulation, up to 145,000 additional charge points would be installed each year in England in the lead-up to 2030 when new petrol or diesel cars won’t be sold in Britain.
It will be applicable to all new houses and other non-residential structures, including offices and supermarkets. This requirement will apply to large-scale renovations that leave buildings with over 10 parking spaces.
Johnson would announce the legislation during Monday’s Confederation of British Industry annual conference speech.
The British government released a comprehensive national Net Zero Strategy that included elements to help accelerate investment in infrastructure in order to make it easier to transition to electric vehicles.
