BEIJING, (Reuters) – China’s foreign ministry stated Tuesday that certain people should cease the “malicious hyping and politicization” surrounding the Peng Shuai tennis player. Foreign governments and organizations continue to ask about her well-being.
Peng’s whereabouts became an international matter after Peng posted on social media a claim that China’s Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli had abused her.
Over the weekend, she reappeared in Beijing. She held a video conference with Thomas Bach (IOC president) on Sunday. However, the Women’s Tennis Association said this didn’t address any concerns regarding her well-being.
Alkan Akad, Amnesty International’s China researcher, also stated to Reuters that the video conference did not alleviate fears about Peng’s well-being and that the IOC had entered “dangerous waters.”
Zhao Lijian (Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson) stated that this was not a diplomatic matter during a Tuesday press briefing.
I think everyone will know that she attended some public functions and held a video chat with President Bach of the IOC. It is my hope that certain people stop hyping maliciously, and even politicizing.
