BRUNSWICK, Georgia (Reuters] – Henry Johnson is 60 and can often be seen weightlifting from his garage in Brunswick (NYSE:), Georgia. People often ask him “Did your see today?” Are you able to recall what the incident was? He immediately knows what they are talking of.
Talk is focused on one subject: Ahmaud, Ahmaud, Arbery’s murder trial. Three white men saw Ahmaud running through their neighborhood in February 2020. They chased him with their trucks, and then shot him after a short struggle.
Many people in Satilla Shores, which is a predominantly white neighborhood, support Arbery’s release. They argue that Arbery’s shooting was not criminal but tragic.
Arbery was shot after he wrestled with one of the accused for his gun. Both defendants pleaded guilty, claiming that the shooting was in self defense.
Johnson said that he used to live in Boykin Ridge with Arbery, where he was mostly Black. Other residents, however, were blunter in their opinions. They said that the defendants should be sent to prison.
Boykin Ridge is nervous ahead of the verdict. It could be this week. The world watches the case closely and will judge the result, residents know.
Johnson, an aircraft technician, said “People are nervous”. Johnson was benchpressing nearly 300 pounds (135 kg) on Monday. Arbery supported him often when he was lifting heavy weights, Johnson said.
Johnson said Johnson that Johnson was proud of Johnson. We joked about Johnson calling him the “running man”, because he ran by and did sprints all day.
Prosecutors claim that Arbery was 25 and was running on Sunday afternoon. Travis McMichael (35), and Gregory McMichael (65) saw Arbery pass their driveway. They assumed the worst, that he was criminal. In an effort to arrest a citizen, their neighbor William Bryan (52) joined them.
Deborah Ray, 72 years old, is a retired florist and lives in Boykin Ridge Road’s cul de sac. She said that Arbery would train for his sprints in her street.
She told Reuters that it was a tragedy about the young man’s fate. He’d call her Ms. Ray, and wave at me as he passed. He loved everyone.
Ray, a white man, stated that everyone talks about the trial. “During my walks I sometimes stop to talk and what-not with everybody. Everyone is friendly. Everybody wants to hear what your thoughts are. Although I cannot judge anybody, it was an awful thing.” she stated.
Camisha Bowers is a 24-year-old friend who was raised down Boykin Ridge Drive from Arbery. She said that everyone in the neighborhood is nervous about hearing the verdict. The jury will consist of eleven white and one Black people.
This is the focus of all the attention in the world. “I just hope that they do the right things, you know,” she stated, adding she wanted justice to her friend.
‘NO TRESPASSING’
There is an atmosphere of fear and betrayal in the Satilla Shores area. Recent weeks have seen a proliferation of “No Trespassing” signs on doors and trees. When asked for interviews, a lot of people said “Go home!” Many people claimed they felt exhausted from the attention of the media.
Before telling Reuters reporter that he was leaving, one of the residents said about the defendants: “The jury should send him home.”
Jay Wells, aged 61 and who lives around the corner, expressed regret about the incident but said he doesn’t think “three men shouldn’t have their lives destroyed.”
Wells stated, “It is a tragedy in any way that you see it.” I know that a man has died, but three other men could be imprisoned forever. It’s not right, but it is what has happened.”
Audra Favre 53 years old, who is a mortgage broker, has moved to Satilla Shores shortly after the shooting.
At the meetings, she stated that nearly everyone was in favour of not guilty verdicts being given to all men. That’s not what I think. “I think they took it into their own hands,” she stated.
She added that she understood, as many people know and are friends with the couple.
