Biden may restart Trump’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy by next week- Axios -Breaking

(Reuters) – The U.S. President Joe Biden is set to begin resettling asylum seekers in Mexico next week, according to Axios.

The news outlet said that the Biden administration would offer the opportunity to receive a COVID-19-vaccination.

Mexico’s national migration institute and foreign ministry did not respond immediately to our requests for comment.

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security sent a memo indicating that it had attempted to end an immigration program begun under former President Donald Trump. The policy required asylum seekers in Mexico to stay for U.S. court trials.

Informally called “Remain in Mexico”, but officially known as the Migrant Protection Protocols earlier in the year, the Biden administration ended it first. A federal judge ordered that the government restart the program because the administration failed to comply with proper regulations.

August’s administration appeal against the decision of the lower court was rejected by The United States Supreme Court.

Late in October, officials stated that they would continue to work with the Administration to resume the program before mid-November to conform to the Judge’s decision.
